| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
3 |
| State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Sherry |
4 |
| Goodman of Chicago on Monday, May 16, 2005; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, A public broadcasting pioneer and community |
6 |
| servant, Sherry Goodman had a passion for public service that |
7 |
| was evident in whatever project she tackled, from championing |
8 |
| civil rights to pulling off the seemingly impossible in the |
9 |
| not-for-profit world; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, Born in Louisville, she attended Bryn Mawr College |
11 |
| in Pennsylvania before receiving a master's degree in English |
12 |
| from the University of Chicago in 1950; before attending the |
13 |
| University of Chicago, she moved with her first husband, Gordon |
14 |
| Goodman, from Pennsylvania to Chicago; he preceded her in death |
15 |
| in 1966; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, While married to Gordon Goodman, Ms. Goodman had |
17 |
| two sons and began work at the National Conference of |
18 |
| Christians and Jews; in 1968, she began working for the Welfare |
19 |
| Council of Metropolitan Chicago; she married Richard Watt in |
20 |
| 1972; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, During the 1960s, Ms. Goodman also was a freelance |
22 |
| producer for WTTW-Channel 11 and helped produce a series on |
23 |
| race relations and children; she eventually was promoted to |
24 |
| director of special audience services before leaving the |
25 |
| station to work on the Museum of Science and Industry's 50th |
26 |
| anniversary celebration in 1983; and
|
27 |
| WHEREAS, While on the museum staff, she helped organize the |
28 |
| Information Technology Resource Center, which provides |
29 |
| technological assistance to non-profit groups, and became its |
30 |
| first executive director; and
|
