| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Marist High School, a Catholic college | ||||||
3 | preparatory school in Chicago, is honoring four of its English | ||||||
4 | teachers at "A Salute to the Bards" at Bourbon Street in | ||||||
5 | Merrionette Park, April 23, 2005; the honorees are Mike Leahy, | ||||||
6 | Larry Malito, Bob Meyers, and Larry Ormond; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The ceremony will recognize the four English | ||||||
8 | teachers for their many contributions to the school and | ||||||
9 | exceptional instruction of their students; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, On September 9, 1963, the doors of Marist High | ||||||
11 | School opened with 320 young men enrolled as the charter class; | ||||||
12 | in the Fall of 2002, the high school entered a new beginning in | ||||||
13 | its history as it became a coeducational school; the full | ||||||
14 | transition to coed will be completed in the 2005-2006 academic | ||||||
15 | year; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Mike Leahy joined Marist in 1968; in addition to | ||||||
17 | his course work, he has written several comedic Christmas plays | ||||||
18 | that featured the school's faculty; he also chaperoned students | ||||||
19 | on more than 20 school-sponsored trips to Quetico Park in | ||||||
20 | Ontario, Canada, where students and faculty canoe, hike, and | ||||||
21 | camp in a wilderness retreat; for over 25 years, Mr. Leahy | ||||||
22 | challenged the minds of young men in his legendary creative | ||||||
23 | writing class; he currently serves as the school's Scholastic | ||||||
24 | Team moderator; he earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola | ||||||
25 | University and master's degree from the University of Virginia; | ||||||
26 | and
| ||||||
27 | WHEREAS, Larry Malito came to Marist in 1965; in addition | ||||||
28 | to his course work, he was English Department chairman for more | ||||||
29 | than 20 years; his passion for English literature was matched | ||||||
30 | only by his passion to teach and shape the minds of young men; | ||||||
31 | the students will be forever grateful for his kindness and |

1 | humor, especially studying Shakespeare; he earned his | ||||||
2 | bachelor's degree from Loyola University and master's degree | ||||||
3 | from Chicago State University; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Bob Meyers joined Marist in 1966 and was English | ||||||
5 | Department chairman prior to Larry Malito; in addition to his | ||||||
6 | course work, he has directed several school plays and musicals | ||||||
7 | during his Marist career; he earned his bachelor's degree from | ||||||
8 | Saint Mary's University and master's degree from Chicago State | ||||||
9 | University, Loyola University, and IIT; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Larry Ormond came to Marist in 1966 and was the | ||||||
11 | school's first speech team moderator; in addition to his course | ||||||
12 | work, he has also been a referee for intramural sports for 25 | ||||||
13 | years and an actor in Mike Leahy's Christmas plays; he earned | ||||||
14 | his bachelor's and master's degrees from DePaul University; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, All four men have been outstanding instructors and | ||||||
16 | role models to the thousands of young men and women they have | ||||||
17 | taught; combined, they have 155 years of service, which is a | ||||||
18 | reflection of their hard work, dedication, and love for Marist; | ||||||
19 | all four men, as the school song goes, have been "loyal and | ||||||
20 | true" Marist men; therefore, be it
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
22 | NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
23 | we recognize and commend Mike Leahy, Larry Malito, Bob Meyers, | ||||||
24 | and Larry Ormond for their love of teaching; through their | ||||||
25 | dedication and commitment, they have shown themselves to be | ||||||
26 | outstanding educators and role models; and be it further
| ||||||
27 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
28 | presented to Mike Leahy, Larry Malito, Bob Meyers, and Larry | ||||||
29 | Ormond as an expression of our esteem.
