Amend Senate Bill 890, AS AMENDED, 3 by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the 4 following: 5 "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing 6 Section 27-21 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/27-21) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-21) 8 Sec. 27-21. History of United States. History of the 9 United States shall be taught in all public schools and in 10 all other educational institutions in this State supported or 11 maintained, in whole or in part, by public funds. The 12 teaching of history shall have as one of its objectives the 13 imparting to pupils of a comprehensive idea of our democratic 14 form of government and the principles for which our 15 government stands as regards other nations, including the 16 studying of the place of our government in world-wide 17 movements and the leaders thereof, with particular stress 18 upon the basic principles and ideals of our representative 19 form of government. The teaching of history shall include a 20 study of the role and contributions of African Americans and 21 other ethnic groups including but not restricted to Polish, 22 Lithuanian, German, Hungarian, Irish, Bohemian, Russian, -2- LRB093 10614 AMC 14417 a 1 Albanian, Italian, Czech, Slovak, French, Scots, Hispanics, 2 Asian Americans, etc., in the history of this country and 3 this State. The teaching of history also shall include a 4 study of the role of labor unions and their interaction with 5 government in achieving the goals of a mixed free enterprise 6 system. No pupils shall be graduated from the eighth grade 7 of any public school unless he has received such instruction 8 in the history of the United States and gives evidence of 9 having a comprehensive knowledge thereof. 10 (Source: P.A. 92-27, eff. 7-1-01.) 11 Section 99.
