SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Midge Kimberly, who passed away on
4October 20, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Midge Kimberly was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi
6on March 30, 1941; she and her family moved to Chicago's South
7Side in 1945, and she attended the Corpus Christi School in
8Bronzeville and later graduated from DuSable High School; she
9received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Psychology
10from Chicago State University and a Master of Business
11Administration from DePaul University; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Midge Kimberly began her career working in social
13services, obtaining corporate sponsorships for the City
14Colleges of Chicago; she became one of the first members of the
15National Association of Black Journalists-Chicago Chapter in
16the 1970s, through which she mentored hundreds of journalists
17and public relations professionals, helping to cultivate the
18next generation of media leaders; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Midge Kimberly became president and CEO of the
20Kimberly Group, where she emerged as an influential leader in
21the Chicago business community; during her career, she
22collaborated with a host of celebrities and media

1professionals, including Muhammad Ali at the 1996 Summer
2Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia; she also launched Champagne &
3Beyond, an online magazine celebrating the accomplishments of
4extraordinary women, in 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Midge Kimberly was a woman of strong faith who
6always offered a warm smile and kind words to anyone she met;
7she devoted her life to empowering others and will be
8remembered as a mentor, a trailblazer, and a friend to many;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Midge Kimberly was the mother of Richard Carl
11Davenport, Sherry Davenport Henry, Robert Davenport, Troy
12Davenport, and Vernon Nelson; the grandmother of eight; and
13the great-grandmother of several; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Midge Kimberly and extend our sincere condolences to her
17family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Midge Kimberly as an expression of
21our deepest sympathy.
