2 | | WHEREAS, The Battle of Midway is widely considered one of |
3 | | the most significant naval battles in the Pacific Theater of |
4 | | World War II, taking place from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942, |
5 | | only six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor; Midway |
6 | | Island is located in the Pacific Ocean almost directly between |
7 | | the United States and Japan, making it a key target in the war; |
8 | | and |
9 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy's victory in the battle, and |
10 | | subsequent defense of the major base on Midway Island, |
11 | | effectively turned the tides of World War II in the Pacific; as |
12 | | a result of the U.S. victory, Japan abandoned its plan to |
13 | | expand its reach in the Pacific and remained on the defensive |
14 | | for the remainder of World War II; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, In 1949, the Chicago Municipal Airport was |
16 | | renamed Midway in honor of the hard fought Battle of Midway; |
17 | | and |
18 | | WHEREAS, June 2025 marks the 83rd anniversary of the |
19 | | Battle of Midway; therefore, be it |
20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2025 |
