SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, January is Radon Action Month, and it is
3imperative for all Illinois citizens and property owners to
4test their homes, schools, apartments, healthcare facilities,
5and other occupied buildings for radon; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas
7that may threaten the health of Illinois citizens and their
8families; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer
10in the U.S., and it is the leading cause of lung cancer in
11non-smokers; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
13estimates that radon is responsible for approximately 21,000
14lung cancer deaths each year; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In Illinois, 41% of homes, and an even higher
16percentage of schools and commercial buildings, have high
17radon levels; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Any building in Illinois may have elevated levels
19of radon, even if neighboring buildings do not, and elevated
20levels pose a serious health threat to Illinois citizens; and

1    WHEREAS, Testing for radon is simple and inexpensive, and
2identified radon problems can be fixed; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the
4U.S. Office of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Environmental
5Protection Agency are supporting efforts to encourage
6homeowners to test their homes for radon, to mitigate elevated
7levels of radon, and to build new homes with radon-resistant
8materials and features; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the month of
11January 2025 as Radon Action Month in the State of Illinois.
