HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the celebration of the Lunar
4New Year as a major holiday celebrated by Asian American
5communities in Illinois, the United States, and around the
6world; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the
8year using the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar or a
9variant; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year starts on the second new moon
11after the winter solstice and falls between January 21 and
12February 19 on the Gregorian calendar used in the United
13States; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year began being celebrated in East
15Asia and Southeast Asia more than 4,000 years ago; today, it is
16observed worldwide among people of Bruneian, Chinese,
17Indonesian, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and
18Vietnamese heritage; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is known as Chinese New Year in
20Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, Spring Festival in
21China, Seollal in Korea, Agricultural Calendar New Year in

1Taiwan, and Tet in Vietnam; and
 
2    WHEREAS, While Lunar New Year celebrations vary in length
3from culture to culture, ranging from three days to two weeks,
4celebration commonalities include gathering with family and
5friends, honoring ancestors and elders, watching and
6participating in traditional dances, settling disputes,
7exchanging gifts, and enjoying feasts; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year occurs in a 12-year cycle with
9each year being represented by one of 12 animals from the
10zodiac; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The 2025 Lunar New Year is the Year of the Snake
12with dual symbolism representing positive and negative
13qualities ranging from good fortune, harvest, procreation, and
14spirituality to cunningness, evil, terror, and threats; and
 
15    WHEREAS, This year, the Lunar New Year will begin on
16January 29, 2025; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we recognize the cultural and historical significance of the
20Lunar New Year to Asian American communities, express our
21deepest respect for Asian Americans and people throughout
