HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to promoting
3sustainable practices, reducing plastic waste, and preserving
4the environment for present and future generations; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Plastic is made from toxic fossil fuels that
6never decompose, harming people, wildlife, and the
7environment; and
 
8    WHEREAS, More than 280 million tons of short-lived plastic
9products become waste every year; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the importance
11of proactive measures to address this issue; and
 
12    WHEREAS, It is estimated that restaurants have saved an
13average of $5,000 per year by adopting
14accessories-upon-request policies; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Skip the Plastic Campaign, created by
16Nicolina Pappas of Nicolina's Turtle Co. and in partnership
17with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative and the
18Bi-State Conservation Action Network, aims to reduce the
19unnecessary use of single-use plastic by promoting the
20practice of providing such items only upon customer request;

1therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we declare April 1, 2025 as Skip the Plastic Day in Illinois;
5and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That we urge all residents, businesses, and
7visitors to reduce plastic waste and protect our environment;
8and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That we commend all businesses that willingly
10participate in Skip the Plastic Day by only offering
11single-use plastic items, including straws and cutlery, by
12request and that take proactive steps toward reducing plastic
13waste; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That we commend all residents who refuse the use
15of single-use plastic items.
