SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/11-302  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-302

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that the Department of Transportation shall install a lighted stop sign at any intersection where 2 stop sign violations that resulted in either a fatality or an infliction of great bodily harm have occurred within a 3-month period.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5changing Section 11-302 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/11-302)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-302)
7    Sec. 11-302. Authority to designate through highway and
8stop and yield intersections.
9    (a) The Department with reference to State highways under
10its jurisdiction, and local authorities with reference to
11other highways under their jurisdiction, may designate through
12highways and erect stop signs or yield signs at specified
13entrances thereto, or may designate any intersection as a stop
14intersection or as a yield intersection and erect stop signs
15or yield signs at one or more entrances to such intersection.
16Designation of through highways and stop or yield
17intersections and the erection of stop signs or yield signs on
18township or road district roads are subject to the written
19approval of the county engineer or superintendent of highways.
20    (a-5) The Department shall install a lighted stop sign at
21any intersection where 2 stop sign violations that resulted in
22either a fatality or an infliction of great bodily harm have
23occurred within a 3-month period.

1    (b) Every stop sign and yield sign shall conform to the
2State Manual and Specifications and shall be located as near
3as practicable to the nearest line of the crosswalk on the near
4side of the intersection or, if there is no crosswalk, then as
5close as practicable to the nearest line of the intersecting
6roadway.
7    (c) The Department may in its discretion and when traffic
8conditions warrant such action give preference to traffic upon
9any of the State highways under its jurisdiction over traffic
10crossing or entering such highway by erecting appropriate
11traffic control devices.
