1 | | AN ACT concerning education. |
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
3 | | represented in the General Assembly: |
4 | | Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is |
5 | | amended by adding Section 68 as follows: |
6 | | (110 ILCS 947/68 new) |
7 | | Sec. 68. Noncitizen eligibility. Notwithstanding any other |
8 | | law, a student who otherwise qualifies for any grant or |
9 | | scholarship offered under this Act, by any other State law, or |
10 | | by a unit of local government shall not be denied the award of |
11 | | the grant or scholarship based solely on the student's status |
12 | | as a noncitizen. |
13 | | As used in this Section, "noncitizen" includes a qualified |
14 | | alien, as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1641, a nonimmigrant, under the |
15 | | federal Immigration and Nationality Act, or an alien who is |
16 | | paroled into the United States under 8 CFR 212.5 or 8 U.S.C. |
17 | | 1182(d)(5), for less than one year. |
18 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
19 | | becoming law. |
