SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-22.10

    Amends the School Code. Allows a student enrolled in grade 7 or 8 to enroll in a required high school course if the course is offered by the high school that the student would attend and the student participates in the course where the student attends school as long as the student passes the end of course exam given at the high school granting the credit for the same course, demonstrating proficiency at the high school level (course is taught by a teacher who holds a professional educator license issued under Article 21B of this Code and endorsed for the grade level and content area of the course).

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
527-22.10 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-22.10)
7    Sec. 27-22.10. Course credit for high school diploma.
8    (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this Code, the
9school board of a school district that maintains any of grades
109 through 12 is authorized to adopt a policy under which a
11student enrolled in grade 7 or 8 who is enrolled in the unit
12school district or would be enrolled in the high school
13district upon completion of elementary school, whichever is
14applicable, may enroll in a course required under Section
1527-22 of this Code, provided that the course is offered by the
16high school that the student would attend, and (i) the student
17participates in the course at the location of the high school,
18and the elementary student's enrollment in the course would
19not prevent a high school student from being able to enroll, or
20(ii) the student participates in the course where the student
21attends school as long as the student passes the end of course
22exam given at the high school granting the credit for the same
23course, demonstrating proficiency at the high school level

1course is taught by a teacher who holds a professional
2educator license issued under Article 21B of this Code and
3endorsed for the grade level and content area of the course.
4    (b) A school board that adopts a policy pursuant to
5subsection (a) of this Section must grant academic credit to
6an elementary school student who successfully completes the
7high school course, and that credit shall satisfy the
8requirements of Section 27-22 of this Code for that course.
9    (c) A school board must award high school course credit to
10a student transferring to its school district for any course
11that the student successfully completed pursuant to subsection
12(a) of this Section, unless evidence about the course's rigor
13and content shows that it does not address the relevant
14Illinois Learning Standard at the level appropriate for the
15high school grade during which the course is usually taken,
16and that credit shall satisfy the requirements of Section
1727-22 of this Code for that course.
18    (d) A student's grade in any course successfully completed
19under this Section must be included in his or her grade point
20average in accordance with the school board's policy for
21making that calculation.
