SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
410 ILCS 270/20

    Amends the Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer and Excessive UV Exposure in Children Act. Provides that beginning with the 2026 through 2027 school year, a school district may incorporate in its curriculum a unit in grades kindergarten through 2, 3 through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through 12 instruction on skin cancer prevention that is provided in an age appropriate manner. Provides that for grades 6 through 12, the curriculum shall include: (1) the basic facts about skin cancer, including, but not limited to, the negative impact of human exposure to ultraviolet radiation obtained through sunburns and indoor tanning; and (2) a comprehensive set of strategies and behaviors to reduce the risk of contracting skin cancer, including, but not limited to, the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Provides that for grades kindergarten through 5, the topics shall include the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning health.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer and
5Excessive UV Exposure in Children Act is amended by changing
6Section 20 as follows:
 
7    (410 ILCS 270/20)
8    Sec. 20. Sun-safe education. Beginning with the 2026-2027
92019-2020 school year, a school district may incorporate in
10its curriculum a unit in grades kindergarten through 2, 3
11through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through 12 of instruction on skin
12cancer prevention that is provided in an age appropriate
13manner. For grades 6 through 12, the curriculum shall include
14all the components listed in paragraphs (1) and (2). The
15curriculum shall include and that includes, but is not limited
16to, the following components:
17        (1) the basic facts about skin cancer, including, but
18    not limited to, the negative impact of human exposure to
19    ultraviolet radiation obtained through sunburns and indoor
20    tanning; and
21        (2) a comprehensive set of strategies and behaviors to
22    reduce the risk of contracting skin cancer, including, but
23    not limited to, the use of sunscreen and sun-protective

2    For grades 6 through 12, the curriculum shall include the
3topics listed in paragraphs (1) and (2). For grades
4kindergarten through 5, the topics shall include the use of
