SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of William Matheson "Bill" Ahlenius, who
4passed away on December 18, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was born to William Ahlenius and
6Kathryn (Trenkle) Ahlenius in Chicago on July 26, 1934; he
7graduated from Bloomington High School in 1951; he attended
8the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at the age of 16
9through the U.S. Navy's Naval Reserves Officers Training Corps
10(NROTC) program, graduating in 1955; later, while teaching at
11the U.S. Naval Academy, he enrolled in Georgetown Law School
12and, upon transitioning to the U.S. Navy Reserve, he
13transferred back to the University of Illinois College of Law
14Urbana-Champaign to complete his legal studies, graduating in
151961; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius began serving as an active-duty
17member of the U.S. Navy in 1955; he was stationed on the
18Destroyer Escort APD-128 from 1955 to 1957; he was then
19assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from 1957 to 1959, where he
20taught Engineering Drawing and Descriptive Geometry; he
21departed the U.S. Navy with the rank of commander; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius, after passing the bar on the first

1try, initially worked at Betty, Newman, and Heninger in
2Davenport, Iowa before moving to Peoria, where he began
3working at Swain, Johnson, and Gard in 1962; he spent the rest
4of his career at the firm, making partner and becoming a
5well-respected pillar of the Peoria legal community before
6retiring in 1997; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was a proud member of Mensa
8International for over 40 years, and he participated in Arrow
9Investments Stock Club; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius enjoyed sharing his passion for
11solving challenging puzzles, board games, and trivia contests
12with his friends and family; he was enthusiastic about gourmet
13cooking and keeping up with local, state, and national
14politics; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was preceded in death by his
16parents and his sister, Susan Pegg; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius is survived by his wife of 66
18years, Jackie (Painter) Ahlenius; his daughters, Kristie
19(Fraser) Engerman and Lisa (Craig) Nafziger; his three
20granddaughters; and his brothers, Chuck Ahlenius, Bob
21Ahlenius, and John Ahlenius; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3William Matheson "Bill" Ahlenius and extend our sincere
4condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
5him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Bill Ahlenius as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
