2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of William Matheson "Bill" Ahlenius, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on December 18, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was born to William Ahlenius and | ||||||
6 | Kathryn (Trenkle) Ahlenius in Chicago on July 26, 1934; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from Bloomington High School in 1951; he attended | ||||||
8 | the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at the age of 16 | ||||||
9 | through the U.S. Navy's Naval Reserves Officers Training Corps | ||||||
10 | (NROTC) program, graduating in 1955; later, while teaching at | ||||||
11 | the U.S. Naval Academy, he enrolled in Georgetown Law School | ||||||
12 | and, upon transitioning to the U.S. Navy Reserve, he | ||||||
13 | transferred back to the University of Illinois College of Law | ||||||
14 | Urbana-Champaign to complete his legal studies, graduating in | ||||||
15 | 1961; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius began serving as an active-duty | ||||||
17 | member of the U.S. Navy in 1955; he was stationed on the | ||||||
18 | Destroyer Escort APD-128 from 1955 to 1957; he was then | ||||||
19 | assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from 1957 to 1959, where he | ||||||
20 | taught Engineering Drawing and Descriptive Geometry; he | ||||||
21 | departed the U.S. Navy with the rank of commander; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius, after passing the bar on the first |

1 | try, initially worked at Betty, Newman, and Heninger in | ||||||
2 | Davenport, Iowa before moving to Peoria, where he began | ||||||
3 | working at Swain, Johnson, and Gard in 1962; he spent the rest | ||||||
4 | of his career at the firm, making partner and becoming a | ||||||
5 | well-respected pillar of the Peoria legal community before | ||||||
6 | retiring in 1997; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was a proud member of Mensa | ||||||
8 | International for over 40 years, and he participated in Arrow | ||||||
9 | Investments Stock Club; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius enjoyed sharing his passion for | ||||||
11 | solving challenging puzzles, board games, and trivia contests | ||||||
12 | with his friends and family; he was enthusiastic about gourmet | ||||||
13 | cooking and keeping up with local, state, and national | ||||||
14 | politics; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius was preceded in death by his | ||||||
16 | parents and his sister, Susan Pegg; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Bill Ahlenius is survived by his wife of 66 | ||||||
18 | years, Jackie (Painter) Ahlenius; his daughters, Kristie | ||||||
19 | (Fraser) Engerman and Lisa (Craig) Nafziger; his three | ||||||
20 | granddaughters; and his brothers, Chuck Ahlenius, Bob | ||||||
21 | Ahlenius, and John Ahlenius; therefore, be it |

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | William Matheson "Bill" Ahlenius and extend our sincere | ||||||
4 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
5 | him; and be it further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Bill Ahlenius as an expression of | ||||||
8 | our deepest sympathy. |
