2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of the Reverend Dr. Wilson Daniels, | ||||||
4 | pastor-emeritus of United Baptist Church in Chicago, who | ||||||
5 | passed away on November 4, 2024; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Born in 1943, Pastor Daniels was affectionately | ||||||
7 | known to many as the "Legend of Lawndale" and lived his life | ||||||
8 | for his faith while encouraging others to do the same with | ||||||
9 | every word he spoke and action he took; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Throughout his 44 years of stewardship over the | ||||||
11 | United Baptist Church congregation and the Lawndale community, | ||||||
12 | Pastor Daniels built a legacy of serving humanity; through his | ||||||
13 | efforts, United Baptist Church began hosting a weekly food | ||||||
14 | pantry in the late 1970s, and it continues to serve over 10,000 | ||||||
15 | people annually; he also established a weekly clothing | ||||||
16 | giveaway, a substance abuse program, and a prison ministry, | ||||||
17 | all of which still serve the community today; more recently, | ||||||
18 | he partnered with the City of Chicago in 2023 to purchase many | ||||||
19 | of the lots surrounding the church, where he assisted in | ||||||
20 | building over 75 homes for low-income and first-time | ||||||
21 | homeowners in the Lawndale community; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels never sought positions or titles; |

1 | although he served as moderator of the Union District Baptist | ||||||
2 | Association of Chicago and Vicinity, was a past treasurer of | ||||||
3 | the Baptist State Convention of Illinois, and was recognized | ||||||
4 | as one of the prominent pastors and preachers of the | ||||||
5 | Progressive National Baptist Convention, service to others was | ||||||
6 | always his driving purpose; he much preferred to act as | ||||||
7 | background support for his colleagues, allowing others to | ||||||
8 | shine while being uplifted by his hard work; he was | ||||||
9 | well-regarded, and his counsel and advice were sought by his | ||||||
10 | colleagues throughout his career and up until his passing; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels' legacy will continue through the | ||||||
12 | Wilson Daniels Scholarship Fund, which is aimed at creating | ||||||
13 | educational opportunities for the youth of United Baptist | ||||||
14 | Church, as well as through the ministries of the many men he | ||||||
15 | mentored through their journeys to become pastors; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels is survived by the Daniels family | ||||||
17 | and the United Baptist Church family; therefore, be it | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | the Reverend Dr. Wilson Daniels, pastor-emeritus of United | ||||||
21 | Baptist Church, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
22 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
