SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of the Reverend Dr. Wilson Daniels,
4pastor-emeritus of United Baptist Church in Chicago, who
5passed away on November 4, 2024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Born in 1943, Pastor Daniels was affectionately
7known to many as the "Legend of Lawndale" and lived his life
8for his faith while encouraging others to do the same with
9every word he spoke and action he took; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Throughout his 44 years of stewardship over the
11United Baptist Church congregation and the Lawndale community,
12Pastor Daniels built a legacy of serving humanity; through his
13efforts, United Baptist Church began hosting a weekly food
14pantry in the late 1970s, and it continues to serve over 10,000
15people annually; he also established a weekly clothing
16giveaway, a substance abuse program, and a prison ministry,
17all of which still serve the community today; more recently,
18he partnered with the City of Chicago in 2023 to purchase many
19of the lots surrounding the church, where he assisted in
20building over 75 homes for low-income and first-time
21homeowners in the Lawndale community; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels never sought positions or titles;

1although he served as moderator of the Union District Baptist
2Association of Chicago and Vicinity, was a past treasurer of
3the Baptist State Convention of Illinois, and was recognized
4as one of the prominent pastors and preachers of the
5Progressive National Baptist Convention, service to others was
6always his driving purpose; he much preferred to act as
7background support for his colleagues, allowing others to
8shine while being uplifted by his hard work; he was
9well-regarded, and his counsel and advice were sought by his
10colleagues throughout his career and up until his passing; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels' legacy will continue through the
12Wilson Daniels Scholarship Fund, which is aimed at creating
13educational opportunities for the youth of United Baptist
14Church, as well as through the ministries of the many men he
15mentored through their journeys to become pastors; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Pastor Daniels is survived by the Daniels family
17and the United Baptist Church family; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20the Reverend Dr. Wilson Daniels, pastor-emeritus of United
21Baptist Church, and extend our sincere condolences to his
22family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it

2presented to the family of Pastor Daniels as an expression of
3our deepest sympathy.
