SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Henry "Hank" Souders of Oak Park, who
4passed away on September 21, 2024 at the age of 19; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hank Souders was born on June 3, 2005 and spent
6nearly his entire life on South Elmwood Avenue in Oak Park; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Hank Souders attended preschool at Barrie Park
8and elementary school at Irving Elementary School; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Hank Souders gained local fame when he was left
10behind at the Museum of Science and Industry on an elementary
11school field trip; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Hank Souders did not panic after realizing he had
13been left behind and instead went to talk to the museum
14security guards, who helped him call his dad and kept him
15company while waiting for the buses to return; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Hank Souders was a Pack 23 Cub Scout and later a
17Troop 2 Boy Scout, where the pinnacle of his experience was
18completing a 12-day, 70-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in
19New Mexico; and

1    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' appetite for adventure and
2independence was fueled by scouting, where not even adverse
3conditions could deter him from tackling a new challenge; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Hank Souders also engaged enthusiastically in a
5wide range of outdoor activities, including snowboarding,
6mountain biking, traveling, fishing, snorkeling, and hiking;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Hank Souders had many additional interests,
9including the games World of Tanks and Magic the Gathering, as
10well as anime, manga, martial arts, and later in his life, cars
11and motorcycles; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Hank Souders had a diet as varied as his hobbies,
13and he found great joy in taking his friends to sample eateries
14throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' staple foods were cheeseburgers
16from Pete's and chicken shawarma made by his friend, Yusef, at
17North Avenue Falafel; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Hank Souders was known for his quick wit, great
19sense of humor, and tremendous kindness, and he used all three
20to help people with anything they might need, whether it be a
21quick laugh, some homework assistance, or a car repair; and

1    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' passion for automobiles was ignited
2most by his Oak Park and River Forest High School auto shop
3teacher, Nick Michalek, who introduced him to the combination
4of problem solving, hands-on learning, science, and all-around
5"cool factor" that composes automotive technology; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Hank Souders even helped teach the auto shop
7class while Nick Michalek was on paternity leave, and he was
8often the person that people turned to with questions; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Hank Souders found the perfect college fit in
10Southern Illinois University's Automotive Technology and
11Engineering program; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' academic interests extended far
13beyond cars, and he supplemented his primary studies with
14classes on architecture, Japanese culture, and Asian history;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Hank Souders had a ferocious work ethic and was
17described by his professors as one of the most inquisitive and
18enthusiastic students at his university, even helping to
19initiate the development of new clubs and courses, making sure
20that everyone had a chance to grasp a little bit of the magic
21that captured him; and

1    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' enthusiasm and kindness towards his
2peers helped cultivate a diverse and amazing group of friends,
3and he was eager to challenge those around him to expand their
4horizons and do more in their lives; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hank Souders planned to intern at an automaker in
6Japan in the summer of 2025 and had the ultimate goal of
7working in racing, with endurance racing at the top of his
8list; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Hank Souders also imagined owning a shop in
10Italy, France, or Japan one day, where he could restore
11vintage rally cars and motorcycles, or building a winning car
12for the 24 Hours at Le Mans race; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Hank Souders' relentless determination and spirit
14made it certain that he could accomplish anything he set his
15mind to, if given the time; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Hank Souders was preceded in death by his
17grandparents, David and Mary Jo Souders; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Hank Souders is survived by his mother, Terese
19(Rosinski); his father, Brian Souders; his sister, Jane; his
20grandparents, Ed and Betsy Rosinski; his aunts and uncles,

1Janelle Souders, Diana (John) Yarberry, and Kevin (Leesa)
2Rosinski; and his cousins, Ashley, Megan, and Jacob Yarberry,
3and Kyle Rosinski; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6Henry "Hank" Souders and extend our sincere condolences to his
7family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
8further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Hank Souders as an expression of our
11deepest sympathy.
