2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Henry "Hank" Souders of Oak Park, who |
4 | | passed away on September 21, 2024 at the age of 19; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders was born on June 3, 2005 and spent |
6 | | nearly his entire life on South Elmwood Avenue in Oak Park; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders attended preschool at Barrie Park |
8 | | and elementary school at Irving Elementary School; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders gained local fame when he was left |
10 | | behind at the Museum of Science and Industry on an elementary |
11 | | school field trip; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders did not panic after realizing he had |
13 | | been left behind and instead went to talk to the museum |
14 | | security guards, who helped him call his dad and kept him |
15 | | company while waiting for the buses to return; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders was a Pack 23 Cub Scout and later a |
17 | | Troop 2 Boy Scout, where the pinnacle of his experience was |
18 | | completing a 12-day, 70-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in |
19 | | New Mexico; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' appetite for adventure and |
2 | | independence was fueled by scouting, where not even adverse |
3 | | conditions could deter him from tackling a new challenge; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders also engaged enthusiastically in a |
5 | | wide range of outdoor activities, including snowboarding, |
6 | | mountain biking, traveling, fishing, snorkeling, and hiking; |
7 | | and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders had many additional interests, |
9 | | including the games World of Tanks and Magic the Gathering, as |
10 | | well as anime, manga, martial arts, and later in his life, cars |
11 | | and motorcycles; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders had a diet as varied as his hobbies, |
13 | | and he found great joy in taking his friends to sample eateries |
14 | | throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' staple foods were cheeseburgers |
16 | | from Pete's and chicken shawarma made by his friend, Yusef, at |
17 | | North Avenue Falafel; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders was known for his quick wit, great |
19 | | sense of humor, and tremendous kindness, and he used all three |
20 | | to help people with anything they might need, whether it be a |
21 | | quick laugh, some homework assistance, or a car repair; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' passion for automobiles was ignited |
2 | | most by his Oak Park and River Forest High School auto shop |
3 | | teacher, Nick Michalek, who introduced him to the combination |
4 | | of problem solving, hands-on learning, science, and all-around |
5 | | "cool factor" that composes automotive technology; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders even helped teach the auto shop |
7 | | class while Nick Michalek was on paternity leave, and he was |
8 | | often the person that people turned to with questions; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders found the perfect college fit in |
10 | | Southern Illinois University's Automotive Technology and |
11 | | Engineering program; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' academic interests extended far |
13 | | beyond cars, and he supplemented his primary studies with |
14 | | classes on architecture, Japanese culture, and Asian history; |
15 | | and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders had a ferocious work ethic and was |
17 | | described by his professors as one of the most inquisitive and |
18 | | enthusiastic students at his university, even helping to |
19 | | initiate the development of new clubs and courses, making sure |
20 | | that everyone had a chance to grasp a little bit of the magic |
21 | | that captured him; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' enthusiasm and kindness towards his |
2 | | peers helped cultivate a diverse and amazing group of friends, |
3 | | and he was eager to challenge those around him to expand their |
4 | | horizons and do more in their lives; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders planned to intern at an automaker in |
6 | | Japan in the summer of 2025 and had the ultimate goal of |
7 | | working in racing, with endurance racing at the top of his |
8 | | list; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders also imagined owning a shop in |
10 | | Italy, France, or Japan one day, where he could restore |
11 | | vintage rally cars and motorcycles, or building a winning car |
12 | | for the 24 Hours at Le Mans race; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders' relentless determination and spirit |
14 | | made it certain that he could accomplish anything he set his |
15 | | mind to, if given the time; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders was preceded in death by his |
17 | | grandparents, David and Mary Jo Souders; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Hank Souders is survived by his mother, Terese |
19 | | (Rosinski); his father, Brian Souders; his sister, Jane; his |
20 | | grandparents, Ed and Betsy Rosinski; his aunts and uncles, |

4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
6 | | Henry "Hank" Souders and extend our sincere condolences to his |
7 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
8 | | further |
9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to the family of Hank Souders as an expression of our |
11 | | deepest sympathy. |
