SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of John Edwin Baldwin, who passed away on
4May 26, 2024 at the age of 86; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Baldwin was born to Francis M. Baldwin and
6Irville (Miller) Baldwin in Berwyn on September 10, 1937; and
 
7    WHEREAS, John Baldwin grew up in Oak Park, where he
8attended Oak Park and River Forest High School and not only
9excelled in sports but was also valedictorian of his 1955
10graduating class; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Baldwin received his undergraduate degree
12from Dartmouth College, graduating valedictorian of his class
13in 1959; he was an athlete on Dartmouth's football, lacrosse,
14track, and ski teams; he earned his PhD in chemistry and
15physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1963;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, John Baldwin began his career at the University
18of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before accepting an offer from
19the University of Oregon, where he taught for 16 years; and
 
20    WHEREAS, John Baldwin served on the President's Science

1Advisory Committee, the Medicinal Chemistry Study Section of
2the National Institutes of Health, the National Science
3Foundation's Chemistry Division Standing Review Panel, the
4Executive Committee of the American Chemical Society Division
5of Organic Chemistry, and the Advisory Board of the Petroleum
6Research Fund of the American Chemical Society; and
 
7    WHEREAS, John Baldwin was an avid reader of history and
8philosophy; he studied many foreign languages, including
9Russian, Swedish, and German; he often took the opportunity to
10travel in both a professional and personal capacity, holding
11visiting professor appointments in Heidelberg, Munich, and
12Hamburg, Germany, in Krakow, Poland, in Stockholm and
13Göteborg, Sweden, and at his alma mater, Cal Tech; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Baldwin was the recipient of the American
15Chemical Society's coveted James Flack Norris Award in 2010, a
16reflection of his diverse and highly influential research
17contributions; the complexity of his experiments is considered
18to be ambitious, elegant, and insightful; and
 
19    WHEREAS, John Baldwin had a love for music along with a
20passion for his field of physical organic chemistry; he had
21the reputation of being a gifted and meticulous scholar,
22researcher, and collaborator and a legendary teacher and
23mentor; and

1    WHEREAS, John Baldwin was married to Anne (Nordlander)
2Baldwin for almost 63 years, and he was a resident at
3Foulkeways in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania; and
 
4    WHEREAS, John Baldwin was preceded in death by his
5parents; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Baldwin is survived by his wife, Anne; his
7children, Claire Miller (Ferdinand von Muench) Baldwin, John
8Nordlander (the late Daphne Berdahl-Baldwin) Baldwin, and
9Wesley Hale (Melisa Barrick) Baldwin; his grandchildren; his
10sister, Martha Baldwin Swanson; and many nieces and nephews;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14John Edwin Baldwin and extend our sincere condolences to his
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of John Baldwin as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
