2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of John Edwin Baldwin, who passed away on |
4 | | May 26, 2024 at the age of 86; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin was born to Francis M. Baldwin and |
6 | | Irville (Miller) Baldwin in Berwyn on September 10, 1937; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin grew up in Oak Park, where he |
8 | | attended Oak Park and River Forest High School and not only |
9 | | excelled in sports but was also valedictorian of his 1955 |
10 | | graduating class; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin received his undergraduate degree |
12 | | from Dartmouth College, graduating valedictorian of his class |
13 | | in 1959; he was an athlete on Dartmouth's football, lacrosse, |
14 | | track, and ski teams; he earned his PhD in chemistry and |
15 | | physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1963; |
16 | | and |
17 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin began his career at the University |
18 | | of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before accepting an offer from |
19 | | the University of Oregon, where he taught for 16 years; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin served on the President's Science |

1 | | Advisory Committee, the Medicinal Chemistry Study Section of |
2 | | the National Institutes of Health, the National Science |
3 | | Foundation's Chemistry Division Standing Review Panel, the |
4 | | Executive Committee of the American Chemical Society Division |
5 | | of Organic Chemistry, and the Advisory Board of the Petroleum |
6 | | Research Fund of the American Chemical Society; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin was an avid reader of history and |
8 | | philosophy; he studied many foreign languages, including |
9 | | Russian, Swedish, and German; he often took the opportunity to |
10 | | travel in both a professional and personal capacity, holding |
11 | | visiting professor appointments in Heidelberg, Munich, and |
12 | | Hamburg, Germany, in Krakow, Poland, in Stockholm and |
13 | | Göteborg, Sweden, and at his alma mater, Cal Tech; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin was the recipient of the American |
15 | | Chemical Society's coveted James Flack Norris Award in 2010, a |
16 | | reflection of his diverse and highly influential research |
17 | | contributions; the complexity of his experiments is considered |
18 | | to be ambitious, elegant, and insightful; and |
19 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin had a love for music along with a |
20 | | passion for his field of physical organic chemistry; he had |
21 | | the reputation of being a gifted and meticulous scholar, |
22 | | researcher, and collaborator and a legendary teacher and |
23 | | mentor; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin was married to Anne (Nordlander) |
2 | | Baldwin for almost 63 years, and he was a resident at |
3 | | Foulkeways in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin was preceded in death by his |
5 | | parents; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, John Baldwin is survived by his wife, Anne; his |
7 | | children, Claire Miller (Ferdinand von Muench) Baldwin, John |
8 | | Nordlander (the late Daphne Berdahl-Baldwin) Baldwin, and |
9 | | Wesley Hale (Melisa Barrick) Baldwin; his grandchildren; his |
10 | | sister, Martha Baldwin Swanson; and many nieces and nephews; |
11 | | therefore, be it |
12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
14 | | John Edwin Baldwin and extend our sincere condolences to his |
15 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
16 | | further |
17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
18 | | presented to the family of John Baldwin as an expression of our |
19 | | deepest sympathy. |
