2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Bruce Voges of St. Joseph, who passed |
4 | | away on June 3, 2024; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on |
6 | | April 28, 1926; he married Kathryn "Katie" Wehlage on June 12, |
7 | | 1954, and she preceded him in death in 2011; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age |
9 | | of 17, serving in the Pacific theater during World War II and |
10 | | throughout the Korean War; he retired as a senior chief petty |
11 | | officer after 21 years of service; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges worked for Magnavox in Urbana before |
13 | | accepting a position as a bank teller at the First National |
14 | | Bank of Ogden, where he advanced to the position of president |
15 | | before retiring in 1988; he and his wife, Katie, along with |
16 | | Rosie and Don Hayn, also owned and operated the Lincoln House |
17 | | Restaurant in Ogden; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges remained active in retirement, |
19 | | helping out extensively with the original renovation of the |
20 | | Vermilion County War Museum; he also, along with 26 other U.S. |
21 | | Navy veterans, traveled to Greece to restore the World War II |

1 | | landing ship LST325 in 2000; after making the landing ship |
2 | | seaworthy, he served as chief boatswain as it sailed across |
3 | | the Atlantic Ocean back to the U.S., becoming affectionately |
4 | | known as "Boats" by all who served with him; he was |
5 | | instrumental in the continued care and restoration of LST325 |
6 | | over the years, and the boat is currently a working World War |
7 | | II museum ship moored in Evansville, Indiana; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges enjoyed woodworking, mowing his lawn, |
9 | | and playing pinochle, which he did almost daily; in recent |
10 | | years, he was known for sitting in his garage with the door |
11 | | open, greeting everyone who walked by and passing out pizza |
12 | | and hot dogs every Halloween; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, Bruce Voges was the father of Mike (Tami) Voges, |
14 | | Michele (Terry) Lawhead, and Tim (Sherri) Voges; the |
15 | | grandfather of Jessi (Jon) Wrench, Jonah (Kelsey) Lawhead, |
16 | | August Voges, Mason (Karee) Voges, and Jordan (Jennifer) |
17 | | Lawhead; and the great-grandfather of Liam Wrench, Briella |
18 | | Wrench, Pierce Lawhead, Sawyer Lawhead, Lincoln Lawhead, and |
19 | | Hudson Lawhead; therefore, be it |
20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
22 | | Bruce Voges and extend our sincere condolences to his family, |
23 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further |
