HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to honor our esteemed colleague, Lakesia
4Collins, for her three years as a member of the Illinois House
5of Representatives and thank her for her dedicated service to
6our State and the 9th House District; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Rep. Collins was born in Chicago, graduated from
8Proviso East High School in Maywood, and earned certification
9as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), going on to provide
10years of service to residents in Chicago nursing homes; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Inspired by her experience providing care in
12nursing homes, Rep. Collins became a labor organizer and
13healthcare advocate for working families, fighting to raise
14wages, improve working conditions, and raise standards of
15care; and
 
16    WHEREAS, During her time as a labor advocate, Rep. Collins
17founded the Future Fighters organization for workers rights,
18served on the executive board of SEIU Healthcare, and was
19recognized for her advocacy for working families by being
20named the 2019 recipient of the Florence Criley Award from the
21Chicago Coalition of Labor Women; and

1    WHEREAS, Rep. Collins began serving in the House of
2Representatives in July 2020, working to support her
3constituents with a focus on key issues important to the
4working families of the 9th District, including improving
5public safety, providing affordable, quality housing, fighting
6for improved funding of public education, ensuring quality,
7affordable healthcare access, and protecting the rights of
8workers; and
 
9    WHEREAS, As a member of the House of Representatives, Rep.
10Collins was a leader in passing measures to expand child care
11benefits, protect the rights of youth in foster care, improve
12responses to lead poisoning, and strengthen protections for
13workers; and
 
14    WHEREAS, During her tenure in the House, Rep. Collins was
15selected by her colleagues to serve as House Chair for the
16Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, was named Black Caucus
17Whip, and served as chairperson for the House Health Care
18Availability and Accessibility Committee; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Rep. Collins has balanced the responsibilities of
20being a public servant with the responsibilities of being a
21mother of three sons; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Rep. Collins left the House of Representatives in

1August 2023, continuing her service to the people of Illinois
2as a state senator for the 5th District; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we congratulate and thank Senator Lakesia Collins for her
6years of dedicated service in the House, and we wish her luck
7in her endeavors as a state senator; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Sen. Collins as an expression of our esteem and
10respect.
