HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In November of 1924, the Homewood Women's Club
3announced the opening of the Homewood Public Library, then
4housed in Mr. Gold's real estate office on Ridge Road; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1925, the Homewood Women's Club raised $1,500
6to establish a new home for the Homewood Public Library and the
7Homewood Women's Club; the funds were used to build a
8foundation, install electricity and heating, and move a small,
9wooden, and abandoned Illinois Central Train Station, which
10was free for the asking, to Triangle Park in Homewood; and
 
11    WHEREAS, On April 19, 1927, the Homewood Public Library
12became a tax-supported institution, as it had outgrown the
13Homewood Women's Club; a librarian was hired, and trustees
14were elected; and
 
15    WHEREAS, By 1958, it became apparent that the community
16was continuing to grow, and the library would need a bigger
17home; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1960, a referendum to build a new library was
19successful, and the building was designed by McPherson, Swing
20and Associates of Homewood at a cost of $159,378; and

1    WHEREAS, On January 13, 1962, the newly built Homewood
2Public Library was opened to the public; a dedication ceremony
3took place on Memorial Day of that year and was attended by
4many; at the ceremony, U.S. Representative of the Fourth
5District Edward J. Derwinski presented Librarian Mrs. Patrick
6T. Murphy with a flag that had flown over the National Capitol
7in Washington, D.C.; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In 1987, the community of Homewood started a
9campaign for a referendum to construct a new library building;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, The referendum passed, and a new library building
12was built and opened in 1989 at 17917 Dixie Highway, where the
13library resides today; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate the Homewood Public Library on its 100 year
17anniversary; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19delivered to the Homewood Public Library as a symbol of our
20esteem and respect.
