1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, In November of 1924, the Homewood Women's Club | ||||||
3 | announced the opening of the Homewood Public Library, then | ||||||
4 | housed in Mr. Gold's real estate office on Ridge Road; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, In 1925, the Homewood Women's Club raised $1,500 | ||||||
6 | to establish a new home for the Homewood Public Library and the | ||||||
7 | Homewood Women's Club; the funds were used to build a | ||||||
8 | foundation, install electricity and heating, and move a small, | ||||||
9 | wooden, and abandoned Illinois Central Train Station, which | ||||||
10 | was free for the asking, to Triangle Park in Homewood; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, On April 19, 1927, the Homewood Public Library | ||||||
12 | became a tax-supported institution, as it had outgrown the | ||||||
13 | Homewood Women's Club; a librarian was hired, and trustees | ||||||
14 | were elected; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, By 1958, it became apparent that the community | ||||||
16 | was continuing to grow, and the library would need a bigger | ||||||
17 | home; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, In 1960, a referendum to build a new library was | ||||||
19 | successful, and the building was designed by McPherson, Swing | ||||||
20 | and Associates of Homewood at a cost of $159,378; and |

1 | WHEREAS, On January 13, 1962, the newly built Homewood | ||||||
2 | Public Library was opened to the public; a dedication ceremony | ||||||
3 | took place on Memorial Day of that year and was attended by | ||||||
4 | many; at the ceremony, U.S. Representative of the Fourth | ||||||
5 | District Edward J. Derwinski presented Librarian Mrs. Patrick | ||||||
6 | T. Murphy with a flag that had flown over the National Capitol | ||||||
7 | in Washington, D.C.; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, In 1987, the community of Homewood started a | ||||||
9 | campaign for a referendum to construct a new library building; | ||||||
10 | and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The referendum passed, and a new library building | ||||||
12 | was built and opened in 1989 at 17917 Dixie Highway, where the | ||||||
13 | library resides today; therefore, be it | ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
15 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we congratulate the Homewood Public Library on its 100 year | ||||||
17 | anniversary; and be it further | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | delivered to the Homewood Public Library as a symbol of our | ||||||
20 | esteem and respect. |
