HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Kappa Alpha Psi
4Fraternity, Incorporated on the occasion of its 114th
5anniversary on January 5, 2025; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi was founded by 10 religious,
7serious-minded men on the campus of Indiana University in
8Bloomington, Indiana on January 5, 1911; later that year, it
9became the first incorporated Black Greek letter organization
10in the United States, once granted a charter by the Indiana
11Secretary of State on May 15, 1911; today, the organization is
12the second oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek
13letter fraternity; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's founders, Elder Watson "The
15Dreamer" Diggs, Byron Kenneth Armstrong, John Milton Lee,
16Henry Tourner Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Guy Levis Grant,
17Paul Waymond Caine, George Wesley Edmonds, Ezra Dee Alexander,
18and Edward Giles Irvin, sought one another's company between
19classes and visited one another's places of lodging to further
20discuss the means of formulating the fledgling fraternity in
21an effort to relieve the depressing isolation they were
22experiencing at Indiana University, which, at the time, did
23not encourage the assimilation of African Americans into the

1student body; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Prior to Kappa Alpha Psi's inception, the
3percentage of African Americans at Indiana University was less
4than 1%, and these students could go weeks without seeing one
5another on campus; African American students were also not
6allowed to reside in on-campus dormitories, not afforded
7off-campus accommodations, denied the use of all other
8university facilities, and barred from participating in
9contact sports; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Realizing that they had no part in Indiana
11University's social life and being drawn together by common
12interests, Kappa Alpha Psi's founders decided that a Greek
13letter fraternity would do much to fill a void in their college
14existence; and
 
15    WHEREAS, While Kappa Alpha Psi's founders further
16developed the formation of the fraternity, the organization
17was given the temporary name of Alpha Omega, taken from the
18Greek alphabet's first and last letters and in correlation
19with the founders' Christian faith and their relationship and
20connection to the church; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi officially became known as Kappa
22Alpha Nu in 1911, possibly as a tribute to the Black students

1of Alpha Kappa Nu Fraternity of 1903, which preceded the
2founders' own at Indiana University; the fraternity's founders
3decided their group would be more than any other social
4organization and the only Greek letter organization founded
5with the concept of achievement; the fraternity began uniting
6college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of
7brotherhood, and its name was officially changed to Kappa
8Alpha Psi on April 15, 1915; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi has five objectives, which are to
10unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond
11of fraternity, to encourage honorable achievement in every
12field of human endeavor, to promote the spiritual, social,
13intellectual, and moral welfare of its members, to assist the
14aims of colleges and universities, and to inspire service in
15the public interest; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's members strive to fulfill its
17motto, "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor", while
18providing pathways to success for youth through several
19national programs, including "Guide Right", a program that
20prepares and mentors high school students for college through
21graduation, "Kappa League", a program that serves male
22students from grades sixth through twelfth with educational,
23occupational, and social guidance, "Achievement Academy", a
24program that enhances the social, professional, and leadership

1experiences of the fraternity's collegiate members, "Room to
2Read", a program in which selected fraternity chapters partner
3with an under-resourced primary school in their area and each
4participating chapter will read aloud, conduct reading
5activities, and donate books to that school, "Learn 2 Live", a
6collaborative national social justice initiative which
7provides immediate grassroots training that will equip current
8and future generations of young persons of color with
9information, education, and instruction on law enforcement and
10community policing, an individual's legal rights, and a set of
11law enforcement rules of engagement, "Lead Kappa", a
12highly-structured and intense leadership experience designed
13to train participants with capacity-building skills in the
14fraternity, on college/university campus, in the community,
15and in corporate America, "G.L.A.D.", or Greeks Learning to
16Avoid Debt, a financial literacy program, and "Are You Ok?", a
17program designed to prioritize mental health in the African
18American community; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi has over 250,000 members, 700
20undergraduate and alumni chapters in nearly every state of the
21United States, including 14 undergraduate chapters and 21
22alumni chapters in the State of Illinois, and 13 international
23chapters in Nigeria, South Africa, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the
24U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, the United Kingdom, Germany,
25South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Abu Dhabi, Canada, and

1Japan; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi proudly boasts of members who
3epitomize the essence of its motto, "Achievement in Every
4Field of Human Endeavor", including Wilt Chamberlain, Arthur
5Ashe, Johnnie Cochran, John Singleton, Alcee Hastings, Bill
6Russell, Montell Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Cedric the
7Entertainer, Marvin Sapp, Colin Kaepernick, Marc Lamont Hill,
8Bernard Harris, Kenny Lofton, Penny Hardaway, and many others;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's membership includes federal,
11state, and local elected officials, including U.S. House
12Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Representative Bennie
13Thompson, Governor Albert Bryan of the U.S. Virgin Islands,
14Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, former Illinois
15Secretary of State Jesse White, Mayor Andre Dickens of
16Atlanta, Georgia, Illinois State Senator Christopher Belt,
17Illinois State Representative William Davis, and Illinois
18State Representative Jawaharial Williams; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we congratulate Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated on
22celebrating its 114th anniversary, and we wish the
23organization and its members continued success.
