2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Kappa Alpha Psi |
4 | | Fraternity, Incorporated on the occasion of its 114th |
5 | | anniversary on January 5, 2025; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi was founded by 10 religious, |
7 | | serious-minded men on the campus of Indiana University in |
8 | | Bloomington, Indiana on January 5, 1911; later that year, it |
9 | | became the first incorporated Black Greek letter organization |
10 | | in the United States, once granted a charter by the Indiana |
11 | | Secretary of State on May 15, 1911; today, the organization is |
12 | | the second oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek |
13 | | letter fraternity; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's founders, Elder Watson "The |
15 | | Dreamer" Diggs, Byron Kenneth Armstrong, John Milton Lee, |
16 | | Henry Tourner Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Guy Levis Grant, |
17 | | Paul Waymond Caine, George Wesley Edmonds, Ezra Dee Alexander, |
18 | | and Edward Giles Irvin, sought one another's company between |
19 | | classes and visited one another's places of lodging to further |
20 | | discuss the means of formulating the fledgling fraternity in |
21 | | an effort to relieve the depressing isolation they were |
22 | | experiencing at Indiana University, which, at the time, did |
23 | | not encourage the assimilation of African Americans into the |

2 | | WHEREAS, Prior to Kappa Alpha Psi's inception, the |
3 | | percentage of African Americans at Indiana University was less |
4 | | than 1%, and these students could go weeks without seeing one |
5 | | another on campus; African American students were also not |
6 | | allowed to reside in on-campus dormitories, not afforded |
7 | | off-campus accommodations, denied the use of all other |
8 | | university facilities, and barred from participating in |
9 | | contact sports; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Realizing that they had no part in Indiana |
11 | | University's social life and being drawn together by common |
12 | | interests, Kappa Alpha Psi's founders decided that a Greek |
13 | | letter fraternity would do much to fill a void in their college |
14 | | existence; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, While Kappa Alpha Psi's founders further |
16 | | developed the formation of the fraternity, the organization |
17 | | was given the temporary name of Alpha Omega, taken from the |
18 | | Greek alphabet's first and last letters and in correlation |
19 | | with the founders' Christian faith and their relationship and |
20 | | connection to the church; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi officially became known as Kappa |
22 | | Alpha Nu in 1911, possibly as a tribute to the Black students |

1 | | of Alpha Kappa Nu Fraternity of 1903, which preceded the |
2 | | founders' own at Indiana University; the fraternity's founders |
3 | | decided their group would be more than any other social |
4 | | organization and the only Greek letter organization founded |
5 | | with the concept of achievement; the fraternity began uniting |
6 | | college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of |
7 | | brotherhood, and its name was officially changed to Kappa |
8 | | Alpha Psi on April 15, 1915; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi has five objectives, which are to |
10 | | unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond |
11 | | of fraternity, to encourage honorable achievement in every |
12 | | field of human endeavor, to promote the spiritual, social, |
13 | | intellectual, and moral welfare of its members, to assist the |
14 | | aims of colleges and universities, and to inspire service in |
15 | | the public interest; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's members strive to fulfill its |
17 | | motto, "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor", while |
18 | | providing pathways to success for youth through several |
19 | | national programs, including "Guide Right", a program that |
20 | | prepares and mentors high school students for college through |
21 | | graduation, "Kappa League", a program that serves male |
22 | | students from grades sixth through twelfth with educational, |
23 | | occupational, and social guidance, "Achievement Academy", a |
24 | | program that enhances the social, professional, and leadership |

1 | | experiences of the fraternity's collegiate members, "Room to |
2 | | Read", a program in which selected fraternity chapters partner |
3 | | with an under-resourced primary school in their area and each |
4 | | participating chapter will read aloud, conduct reading |
5 | | activities, and donate books to that school, "Learn 2 Live", a |
6 | | collaborative national social justice initiative which |
7 | | provides immediate grassroots training that will equip current |
8 | | and future generations of young persons of color with |
9 | | information, education, and instruction on law enforcement and |
10 | | community policing, an individual's legal rights, and a set of |
11 | | law enforcement rules of engagement, "Lead Kappa", a |
12 | | highly-structured and intense leadership experience designed |
13 | | to train participants with capacity-building skills in the |
14 | | fraternity, on college/university campus, in the community, |
15 | | and in corporate America, "G.L.A.D.", or Greeks Learning to |
16 | | Avoid Debt, a financial literacy program, and "Are You Ok?", a |
17 | | program designed to prioritize mental health in the African |
18 | | American community; and |
19 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi has over 250,000 members, 700 |
20 | | undergraduate and alumni chapters in nearly every state of the |
21 | | United States, including 14 undergraduate chapters and 21 |
22 | | alumni chapters in the State of Illinois, and 13 international |
23 | | chapters in Nigeria, South Africa, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the |
24 | | U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, the United Kingdom, Germany, |
25 | | South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Abu Dhabi, Canada, and |

2 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi proudly boasts of members who |
3 | | epitomize the essence of its motto, "Achievement in Every |
4 | | Field of Human Endeavor", including Wilt Chamberlain, Arthur |
5 | | Ashe, Johnnie Cochran, John Singleton, Alcee Hastings, Bill |
6 | | Russell, Montell Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Cedric the |
7 | | Entertainer, Marvin Sapp, Colin Kaepernick, Marc Lamont Hill, |
8 | | Bernard Harris, Kenny Lofton, Penny Hardaway, and many others; |
9 | | and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi's membership includes federal, |
11 | | state, and local elected officials, including U.S. House |
12 | | Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Representative Bennie |
13 | | Thompson, Governor Albert Bryan of the U.S. Virgin Islands, |
14 | | Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, former Illinois |
15 | | Secretary of State Jesse White, Mayor Andre Dickens of |
16 | | Atlanta, Georgia, Illinois State Senator Christopher Belt, |
17 | | Illinois State Representative William Davis, and Illinois |
18 | | State Representative Jawaharial Williams; therefore, be it |
19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
20 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
21 | | we congratulate Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated on |
22 | | celebrating its 114th anniversary, and we wish the |
23 | | organization and its members continued success. |
