2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of | ||||||
4 | President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter Jr., 39th President of the | ||||||
5 | United States, who passed away on December 29, 2024; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, President Carter was born on October 1, 1924, and | ||||||
7 | he dedicated his life to peace, democracy, and humanitarian | ||||||
8 | efforts, leaving an indelible mark on the world through his | ||||||
9 | leadership and service; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, President Carter's early political career | ||||||
11 | included service in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 | ||||||
12 | and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, demonstrating a | ||||||
13 | steadfast commitment to the citizens of his state; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, President Carter served as the 39th President of | ||||||
15 | the United States from 1977 to 1981, during which time he | ||||||
16 | established the United States Department of Energy and the | ||||||
17 | Department of Education, and he created a national energy | ||||||
18 | policy focused on conservation and innovation; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, After leaving office in 1981, President Carter | ||||||
20 | established The Carter Center in 1982 to advance human rights, | ||||||
21 | promote democracy, and combat global health challenges, |

1 | efforts that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, President Carter undertook | ||||||
3 | peace negotiations, election monitoring, and initiatives to | ||||||
4 | eradicate infectious diseases, profoundly impacting the lives | ||||||
5 | of millions worldwide; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, President Carter's dedication to service extended | ||||||
7 | to the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity, where he | ||||||
8 | played a key role in building homes and improving living | ||||||
9 | conditions for over 59 million people globally, embodying | ||||||
10 | compassion and humility; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, President Carter's legacy as a statesman, | ||||||
12 | humanitarian, and advocate for social justice will inspire | ||||||
13 | generations to strive for a more equitable and peaceful world; | ||||||
14 | and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, President Carter passed away peacefully on | ||||||
16 | Sunday, December 29, 2024 at the age of 100, following a life | ||||||
17 | devoted to public service and global betterment; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, President Carter's passing marks the end of a | ||||||
19 | remarkable chapter in American and global history, and his | ||||||
20 | contributions will continue to shape lives and communities for | ||||||
21 | years to come; therefore, be it |

2 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we mourn the passing of President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, | ||||||
4 | 39th President of the United States, and extend our sincere | ||||||
5 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
6 | him; and be it further | ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That we honor the life and legacy of President | ||||||
8 | Carter, and we express our profound gratitude for his lifelong | ||||||
9 | service to humanity; and be it further | ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to the Carter family as a token of our respect and | ||||||
12 | recognition of President Carter's extraordinary life and | ||||||
