| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Melva Jean Halbert; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert was born in Laurel, Mississippi to | ||||||
5 | Althea (McCullom) and Homer McGee in January of 1935; she | ||||||
6 | received her education
in Mississippi before moving to Chicago; | ||||||
7 | she married L.J. Halbert on September 11, 1954; she attended | ||||||
8 | St. Mary's
Teaching College Center for Learning and Malcolm X | ||||||
9 | College; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert began her career as a crossing guard | ||||||
11 | with the Chicago Police Department; she then moved to the | ||||||
12 | Chicago Board of Education and worked at various elementary | ||||||
13 | schools
and Lakeview High School; she worked for the Chicago
| ||||||
14 | Board of Education for 27 years before retiring in 1998; she
| ||||||
15 | received several Chicago Board of Education commendations and | ||||||
16 | proclamations for her
excellent work; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert served as
both board member and | ||||||
18 | general member on several community organizations, including | ||||||
19 | the
Menard Block Club, the Association for a Better Austin, and | ||||||
20 | the Menard Avenue Neighborhood Watch
Program; she was an active | ||||||
21 | member of the Stone Temple
Missionary Baptist Church, where she | ||||||
22 | participated in the gospel choir, adult Bible class, and other |

| |||||||
1 | ministries; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert always provided her time, | ||||||
3 | experience,
knowledge, and concern to those who were in need; | ||||||
4 | she was known as
one of the great cooks in the family; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert was preceded in death by her husband | ||||||
6 | of 63 years, L.J. Halbert; her son, Jerome Halbert
(Georgette); | ||||||
7 | her grandchild, Kristen Nicole Halbert; her siblings, Ora | ||||||
8 | McGavock, Verdell
McGee, Grace Pruitt, Eddie McGee, and Charles | ||||||
9 | McGee; and her parents; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Melva Halbert is survived by her daughter, Debra | ||||||
11 | Patrice Elizabeth Halbert Evans (Willard); her son, Michael | ||||||
12 | Anthony Peter
Halbert (Victoria); her grandchildren, Patrice | ||||||
13 | Imani Evans, Willard Samuel Evans III, and Paris
Elizabeth | ||||||
14 | Halbert; her siblings, Leedale McGee, Cozen Quince, Joyce | ||||||
15 | Wilburn, and Drucilla
Woods; her sister-in-law, Dessie Amos; | ||||||
16 | her brother-in-law, Charles Halbert Sr.; and numerous extended
| ||||||
17 | relatives and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Melva Jean Halbert, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
21 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
22 | further
