2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Dean Emerson Grant of North Barrington, |
4 | | who passed away on May 10, 2018; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant was born in Concord, Massachusetts to |
6 | | Dr. Roald and Lydia (Hoersch) Grant on October 3, 1943; he grew |
7 | | up in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Connecticut before his |
8 | | family settled in New York City in 1952; he graduated from |
9 | | Collegiate High School in New York City in 1961, where he |
10 | | played football; one of his first summer jobs as a high school |
11 | | student in New York was working as an ambulance driver; he |
12 | | married Jeanne Hilda Conklin in Philadelphia on December 23, |
13 | | 1964 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965; |
14 | | he received a Master of Business Administration from the |
15 | | University of Chicago in 1967; he worked abroad at Saint Thomas |
16 | | Hospital in London, England from 1969 to 1970; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant had a 36-year career as a hospital |
18 | | administrator at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he rose |
19 | | through the ranks to become president and CEO of Alexian |
20 | | Brothers Health Systems; he retired in 2007; he co-founded and |
21 | | served as the CEO of ExecuMed in 1981; he was also CEO of |
22 | | Critical Care Inc. at Alexian; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, As administrator at Alexian Brothers, Dean Grant |
2 | | oversaw a period of enormous growth for the network of |
3 | | hospitals in Illinois, California, New Jersey, and Missouri; he |
4 | | helped make Alexian Brothers a household name beyond its base |
5 | | in Elk Grove; he was a driving force behind the decision in |
6 | | 2000 to purchase the naming rights to the AAA minor league |
7 | | baseball stadium in Schaumburg, which was the home for the |
8 | | Schaumburg Flyers from its opening through the end of the 2010 |
9 | | season, and is now known as Boomers Stadium and the home of the |
10 | | Schaumburg Boomers baseball team; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant authored How to Negotiate Physicians' |
12 | | Contracts in 1979 and was the founder and publisher of American |
13 | | Nursing News, also known as ANN-Midwest in 1980; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant was an avid traveler and attended a |
15 | | world health congress event in Bolivia; he also visited China, |
16 | | Germany, Britain, Europe, Vietnam, Thailand, and many |
17 | | countries in South America; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a sailing enthusiast in his youth |
19 | | and built a sailboat from scratch at his family's summer |
20 | | cottage in Sayville, Long Island at the age of 15; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a devoted husband and father who |
22 | | took a deep interest in the lives, interests, and career |
|

1 | | development of his family; he was also a dedicated fan of the |
2 | | Chicago Bears; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant was preceded in death by his parents; |
4 | | his siblings, Roald Jr., Gale, and Danae; his nephew, Keith |
5 | | Owen Stewart; and his brother-in-law, Lloyd Conklin; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Dean Grant is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his |
7 | | daughter, Deanna Lynn Cummings (Micky); his son, Donald D. |
8 | | Grant (Susan); his grandsons, Gary Michael and Grant Edward |
9 | | Cummings, and James Emerson Grant; his granddaughters, Delaney |
10 | | Lynn Cummings and Cheryl Lee Grant; his sister-in-law, Mai Tran |
11 | | Conklin; his nephew, Keith; his nieces, Ingrid Kirschbaum (and |
12 | | her daughter), Katherine Odell, Karin Scandella, Erin Conklin, |
13 | | and Kelly Tidwell (Jay) and their children, Josh, Becca, and |
14 | | Kat; and his nephews, Erik Kirschbaum and his children, Steven, |
15 | | Julie, Lukas, and Finn, and Gregg Stewart; therefore, be it

16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Dean Emerson Grant, and extend our sincere condolences to his |
19 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
20 | | further
