SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dean Emerson Grant of North Barrington, who passed away on May 10, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant was born in Concord, Massachusetts to Dr. Roald and Lydia (Hoersch) Grant on October 3, 1943; he grew up in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Connecticut before his family settled in New York City in 1952; he graduated from Collegiate High School in New York City in 1961, where he played football; one of his first summer jobs as a high school student in New York was working as an ambulance driver; he married Jeanne Hilda Conklin in Philadelphia on December 23, 1964 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965; he received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1967; he worked abroad at Saint Thomas Hospital in London, England from 1969 to 1970; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant had a 36-year career as a hospital administrator at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he rose through the ranks to become president and CEO of Alexian Brothers Health Systems; he retired in 2007; he co-founded and served as the CEO of ExecuMed in 1981; he was also CEO of Critical Care Inc. at Alexian; and

WHEREAS, As administrator at Alexian Brothers, Dean Grant oversaw a period of enormous growth for the network of hospitals in Illinois, California, New Jersey, and Missouri; he helped make Alexian Brothers a household name beyond its base in Elk Grove; he was a driving force behind the decision in 2000 to purchase the naming rights to the AAA minor league baseball stadium in Schaumburg, which was the home for the Schaumburg Flyers from its opening through the end of the 2010 season, and is now known as Boomers Stadium and the home of the Schaumburg Boomers baseball team; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant authored How to Negotiate Physicians' Contracts in 1979 and was the founder and publisher of American Nursing News, also known as ANN-Midwest in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant was an avid traveler and attended a world health congress event in Bolivia; he also visited China, Germany, Britain, Europe, Vietnam, Thailand, and many countries in South America; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a sailing enthusiast in his youth and built a sailboat from scratch at his family's summer cottage in Sayville, Long Island at the age of 15; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a devoted husband and father who took a deep interest in the lives, interests, and career development of his family; he was also a dedicated fan of the Chicago Bears; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Roald Jr., Gale, and Danae; his nephew, Keith Owen Stewart; and his brother-in-law, Lloyd Conklin; and

WHEREAS, Dean Grant is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his daughter, Deanna Lynn Cummings (Micky); his son, Donald D. Grant (Susan); his grandsons, Gary Michael and Grant Edward Cummings, and James Emerson Grant; his granddaughters, Delaney Lynn Cummings and Cheryl Lee Grant; his sister-in-law, Mai Tran Conklin; his nephew, Keith; his nieces, Ingrid Kirschbaum (and her daughter), Katherine Odell, Karin Scandella, Erin Conklin, and Kelly Tidwell (Jay) and their children, Josh, Becca, and Kat; and his nephews, Erik Kirschbaum and his children, Steven, Julie, Lukas, and Finn, and Gregg Stewart; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dean Emerson Grant, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dean Grant as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
