2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Thomas W. "Tom" Fletcher of Oakwood, who |
4 | | passed away on May 9, 2018; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Tom Fletcher was born in Elmira, New York to Glen |
6 | | H. and Alma L. (Smith) Fletcher on June 28, 1942; he married |
7 | | his college sweetheart, Susan K. Volle, in Elmhurst on August |
8 | | 31, 1963; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Tom Fletcher played baseball in the Detroit Tigers |
10 | | organization as a southpaw pitcher, after earning All-American |
11 | | honors at the University of Illinois; after his baseball |
12 | | career, he worked as a safety supervisor at TeePak in Danville |
13 | | and later as an activities supervisor at the Danville |
14 | | Correctional Center; he retired in 2003; and

15 | | WHEREAS, Tom Fletcher was a life member of Hebron United |
16 | | Methodist Church in Newtown; while baseball served as a way of |
17 | | life for him, it was not a singular passion, as he enjoyed |
18 | | tinkering around his country home, building decks, crafting |
19 | | furniture, and moving dirt for numerous flowering terraces and |
20 | | walkways; he also played golf with lifelong friends every |
21 | | Tuesday; traveling across the country with his most treasured |
22 | | friend, his wife, Sue, was a newfound joy in retirement; he |
