AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 918




2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 918 by replacing 
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:

 
4    "Section 5. The School Code is amended  by adding Section 
514-6.07 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/14-6.07 new)
7    Sec. 14-6.07. Reading specialist. The school board of each 
8school district that maintains one or more elementary schools 
9may employ one full-time reading specialist in each of those 
10schools.  The reading specialist shall have training in the 
11identification of and the appropriate interventions, 
12accommodations, and teaching techniques for students with 
13dyslexia or a related disorder and shall serve as an advisor on 
14dyslexia and related disorders. The reading specialist shall 
15have an understanding of the definition of dyslexia and a 
16working knowledge of (i) techniques to help a student on the

1continuum of skills with dyslexia; (ii) dyslexia 
2characteristics that may manifest at different ages and grade 
3levels; (iii) the basic foundation of the keys to reading, 
4including multisensory, explicit, systemic, and structured 
5reading instruction; and (iv) appropriate interventions, 
6accommodations, and assistive technology supports for students 
7with dyslexia.".
